George Clooney's latest drama, "The American," topped the box office for the Labor Day weekend, despite poor reviews.
Clooney plays an assassin on one last mission in Italy. Viewers gave the film poor ratings, according to the Los Angeles Times. CinemaScore reported a D- average from viewers. Adults over 25 gave it an F.
"The American" made $16.4 million on the three-day weekend. It made $19.5 million since opening on Wednesday.
The good box office-mixed ratings trend showed in Clooney's last two movies as well: 2009's "Men Who Stare at Goats" and 2008's "Leatherheads."
Robert Rodriguez's low-budget slasher flick "Machete" finished in second with $14 million. Drew Barrymore's "Going the Distance" made $8.6 million.
